SAF230 International Politics (Spring 2024)

About the course

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the field of international relations. Students will explore the historical and current context of global politics, and examine the key concepts, theories, and approaches used to understand and analyze the international system. In addition, students will study the major topics of international relations, including war and security, international cooperation and law, international political economy, and the role of international and non-governmental organizations. The course will also examine contemporary issues such as human rights, environmental sustainability, and human security, and will encourage students to engage in critical analysis of these issues. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of international relations and be equipped with the tools necessary to analyze and evaluate current global events.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Upon completion of the course students are expected to have acquired the following knowledge:

  • Understanding the key concepts, theories, and approaches used in the study of international politics

  • Understanding the key issues and challenges facing the global community

 

Upon completion of the course students are expected to have acquired the following skills:

  • Analyzing the causes and consequences of the global problems and social issues

  • Developing critical thinking and analytical skills for evaluating the complex and dynamic nature of international politics.

 

Upon completion of the course students are expected to have acquired the following competence:

  • Identifying and discussing the attempts to handle these issues and problems in world politics

  • Developing the ability to engage in informed and critical debate on key issues in international politics.

Forms of teaching and learning

 Classroom lectures. One 3-hour sessions per week including lecture, group work etc.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

Coursework requirements

  • Form of assessment: Students will make a short presentation (10 minutes). The coursework must be passed in order to get access to the school exam.

  • Duration: One week

  • Grading scale: Passed/not passed

  • Language: English

  • Support material: All printed and written supporting material.

  • Form of assessment: Digital school assessment-Inspera:

  • Proportion: 100 %

  • Duration: 5 hours

  • Grouping: Individual

  • Grading scale: Letter (A - F)

  • Language: Optional language English or Norwegian

  • Support material: Only general dictionary in mother tongue/Norwegian/English in paper version.
