SØK700 Global Economic Development (Autumn 2024)

The course gives the student an opportunity to delve into selected topics related to global macro development trends, including:

  • economic growth
  • structural transformation
  • global trade
  • economic inequality
  • population growth and demography
  • urbanization
  • migration
  • human capital
  • agriculture and the food system
  • climate and environment
  • the sustainable development goals

Knowledge

  • Have advanced knowledge about theories for economic development processes at the societal level, locally and globally
  • Be able to apply knowledge about economic development in analysis

  • Can analyze growth- and tranformation processes at the macro level
  • Can carry out an independent, limited research project under supervision complying with established research ethical norms

Forms of teaching and learning

The class is divided into groups, where each is allocated up to 2 hours of group supervision per week, either in a classroom or in Zoom. Timing of this weekly supervision is decided by the group and the superviser jointly. The group supervision will be conducted in a manner that makes it possible for all group members to participate, if necessary in Zoom and/ or outside normal working hours.

The class will be gathered for joint sessions 2-3 times during the course of the semester, each lasting 3 hours, within normal working hours. The first day of class is one of those sessions. Then, presense is mandatory. 

It is emphasized that group work is the core of the teaching arrangements, and all participants must be prepared to participate in group supervision and contribute to the group work.
