ADM910 Philosophy of Science and Foundational Issues in Social Science (Autumn 2024)

About the course

This course provides in-depth knowledge of philosophy of social science. The students will receive a comprehensive introduction to scientific explanations (such as deduction, induction and abduction) and methodological debates in social science. Throughout the course, the students will practice critical reflection on basic assumptions in social science and evaluate arguments from different perspectives. They will be able to identify and analyze the interaction between individual action and social structures.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will acquire the following knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of key concepts and debates in philosophy of science and methodology.
  • Advanced knowledge of key social theorists, their ideas, and methodological approaches.
  • Advanced knowledge of philosophical perspectives on social reality, scientific explanation and the interplay between individual action and social structures.

 

Skills

After completing the course, the student will acquire the following skills:

  • Critical assessment skills to evaluate arguments in philosophy of social science and social theory.
  • Ability to critically reflect on the underlying concepts and assumptions that shape social science research.
  • Proficiency in analyzing the implications of various philosophical perspectives in social science research.

After completing the course, the student will acquire the following competences:

  • Critical thinking skills to approach the social world and pose relevant questions for conducting social inquiry.
  • Proficiency in using various forms of scientific explanation and methodology.
  • Strong communication skills to discuss academic issues in class, as well as express themselves through written assignments and other academic activities.

Seminars

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • 50 % presence in seminars is required to qualify for final exam. Required attendance can be replaced with an additional assignment that must be passed (2-3000 words).

  • Comment: Mandatory coursework must be completed in the same semester as the course is taught, and then gives access to the ordinary exam. Approved course work also give access to the first "New and retake exam" if such an exam is arranged. The mandatory course work is no longer valid in the future. This means that students who take the course again must do the mandatory course work again.

  • Form of assessment: Digital school examination
  • Proportion: 100 %

  • Duration: 4 hours

  • Grading scale: Letter (A - F)

  • Supporting materials: Hand-written notes on paper
