IBE320 Extended Reality (Spring 2024)

About the course

The course introduces the area of digital technologies that seeks to alter, create, or otherwise modify a person’s experience of reality through approaches commonly referred to as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Often combined under the term eXtended Reality (XR), this course will provide a history of XR, an overview of the technologies involved, the issues encountered, the applications possible, as well as the foundational physiological and cognitive experience of sensing and perceiving reality. This course will examine some of the particular technical challenges in creating XR systems such as interaction and tracking. Practical sessions and assignments will cover practical elements of designing, building, and evaluating XR experiences.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

On completion of the course the student will have knowledge of:

 

the hardware and software involved in creating the XR experiences,

  • XR design and development processes, and

  • how human beings interact with XR systems.

 

The student will have competence to:

  • assess how XR can address identified needs, and

  • contribute in projects where they consider using or developing XR as part of the solutions.

 

The student will have acquired skills in:

  • setting up XR experiences using software, and

  • evaluating XR systems.

 

The student will gain a sense of:

  • the social consequences of XR technologies, and

  • the environmental impact of using XR in a variety of settings.

Forms of teaching and learning

4 hours of teaching per week with lectures, seminars, project work and problem solving with guidance from auxiliary teacher and subject teacher.
