TRA904-301 Public Transport Planning and Operations (Autumn 2024)

About the course

In this course we study the role of local and regional public transport in society and its potential to contribute to a future sustainable transport system.

The course aims to give a thorough introduction to models that can be used in the analysis of demand for and supply of public transport as well as providing an introduction to methods for planning an efficient public transport system. The course will give an understanding of the costs and benefits of providing public transport operations. The course will also provide knowledge of the principles of optimal pricing and supply determination of public transport services under different conditions including pricing of externalities.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

  • Knowledge: know how the public transport system affects the rest of society. To understand the key principles of public transport planning. To have a knowledge of the factors that affect the costs of operating local and regional public transport systems.

  • Skills: to be able to use analytical tools in the assessment of specific public transport systems; and to be able to use analytical tools when planning the operation of public transport systems.

  • General competences: students’ participation in the course will develop their independent thinking, problem-solving and team working.

Forms of teaching and learning

Teaching consists of lectures, one field visit and group project work.

Examination

Examination 1:

  • Form of assessment: Group project and presentation

  • Proportion: 40 %

  • Duration: Submitted on the Friday of the week long seminar

  • Grouping: Group (but including individual peer assessment)

  • Grading scale: Letter (A - F)

  • Support material: References provided in the coursework guidance and lectures

Examination 2:

  • Form of assessment: Home assessment without presentation

  • Proportion: 60 %

  • Duration: Submitted on the Monday following the week long seminar.

  • Grouping: Individually
