TRA950 Master's Degree Thesis (Spring 2023)

About the course

A thesis is an independent, extensive work that is done under the guidance of an advisor/professor in the discipline. Not more than two students can work on the same thesis. Candidates are relatively free to choose topics. A thesis can be either applied, related to a company or an agency/governmental body, or it can be in the form of a theoretical investigation.

Recommended requirements

Only those students who are enrolled in the MSc program in Logistics can write a thesis under the TRA950 course code. In addition, each candidate must have an approved proposal that has been prepared as part of LOG904. TRA950 must be the last course taken within the MSc program, whihc means that the candidate needs to have approved 90 ECT before the master thesis is graded.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

After completing the Master's thesis, the student will

Knowledge

  • have advanced knowledge within the academic field and specialized insight in a limited area

  • have thorough knowledge of the scholarly theories and methods in the field of their specific topic area

  • be able to apply knowledge to new areas within the academic field of their specific topic area

  • be able to analyze academic problems relevant to their chosen specific topic area

Skills

  • be able to analyze and deal critically with various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate scholarly arguments

  • be able to analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations in the field

  • be able to use relevant methods for research and scholarly work and to select data collection methods in an independent manner

  • be able to carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision and in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics

General competencies

  • Be able to analyze relevant academic, professional and research ethical problems

  • Be able to apply his/her knowledge and skills in new areas in order to carry out the assignments in her/his specific topic area

Forms of teaching and learning

The master's thesis is an independent work done by a single student or two students together and supervised by a faculty advisor. It is the duty of each student to obtain a supervisor at the latest in the start of Semester 3. The supervisor will usually also supervise the proposal. Taken together with the master thesis, the student(s) are entitled to have at least 20 hours supervision, but can not expect to have more than 40 hours supervision. The supervision includes all aspects of this process like giving advice, reading drafts and so on.

  • Grading scale: Letter (A - F)

  • Support material: All printed and written supporting material

  • Comment: Submission of the written thesis and an oral thesis defence are required. The final grade is a combination of grades received on the thesis and the oral presentation. Only one final grade will be presented to the student.
