About the course

The economic dimension of cities is one of the most important driving forces behind the urban-based societies we live in today. A basic understanding of cities as economic units is therefore important. The course gives students an introduction to cities as economic systems and some economic models used in analyzes of cities. The course deals with the economic forces behind the growth, development and stagnation of cities. The course also introduces students to cities as a place, place capital as a concept, and the connection to the city's attractiveness. They are discussed in relation to opportunities and challenges for positive growth and development. Among other things, there may be preconditions for downtown shopping and location, cultural and social aspects e.g. branding and the design of the city center and function as a meeting room.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

During the course, students are trained in using relevant methods and theories about urban economics. Students must have an understanding of cities as economic units and specialized insight into the economic forces behind the emergence, development and stagnation of cities.

Skills

Students should be able to analyze academic issues about the city as a place and attractiveness using urban economic models. The students should also be able to use welfare economics to evaluate policies that affects urban areas.

General competance

Students are trained to work with practical and theoretical problem solving and convey reasoning orally and in writing.
