SCM305 Applied Management Science (Autumn 2020)

About the course

The emphasis in this course is on practical problem-solving with Excel and other available software to solve real-life problems in logistics systems management. Some examples of topics addressed in this course include analysis and decision-making in the areas of network design, scheduling, workforce organization, investment planning, profitability analysis. The course also covers real-life aspects relevant to management, such as handling uncertainty, analysis and integration of problem settings, and multi-criteria decision-making.

Basic knowledge of spreadsheets (Excel) is an advantage.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Upon completing the course, the candidates:

  • strengthen the ability of practical and realistic problem solving
  • are able to identify and assess the necessary aspects of decision-making problems
  • apply spreadsheet models and other software for decision support
  • analyze and communicate the results of problem solving

Forms of teaching and learning

Three hours of lectures per week. Each week, practical tasks will be given to the students to solve. The students must bring their own laptop computers to the classroom. 

The candidates will be given two assignments for which the reports must be prepared and submitted within specified deadlines. The reports graded with the character (A - F)
