Social workers in Schools

Social workers in Schools ("Vernepleieren i skolen", abbrivated to VIS in Norwegian) is a research and teaching project that examines the school as an arena for inclusion, with an empirical basis in the work of social workers in the Norwegian welfare public schools.

Project Description

The project addresses both the professional practice of social educators in schools and the school as an arena for inclusion and upbringing.

Sub-goals of the project

  1. Map the professional practice of social educators in schools regionally and nationally: their role in individual, group, and organizational measures, and how they collaborate with other professional groups.
  2. Contribute to the development of theory and methods for therapeutic work in schools.
  3. Investigate whether the presence of social educators and other professionals (such as child welfare officers and sociologists) in schools can affect the reported incidence of mental health issues among students.
  4. Achieve a better understanding of how the professional practice of social educators in schools can contribute to processes of inclusion and exclusion.

This means understanding societal interests at stake and the conditions they create for professional practice, and further, how the professional practice of social educators affects children’s opportunities for participation in school.

The project commenced in the fall of 2021 and is planned to continue until 2027. Third-year social educator students are research assistants and collect data through their specialization practice in schools (school years 21/22 and 22/23).
