Good news from change agents in Tanzania – Children with special needs

Last autumn 10 Tanzanian students from Patandi Teachers College of special needs education was in Molde as NOREC exchange participants. On this blog, they shared their eagerness in improving the situation of children with special needs, including their plans about keeping up their engagement and work to benefit children with special needs in Tanzania, after return from Norway. These agents of change have now completed their study programme. They are all qualified specialized teachers, working in schools in different regions in Tanzania.

Seif Hamisi Mussa is now employed as a head teacher at a school in Lindi Region, Tanzania. The school has 789 pupils, including 30 pupils with intellectual disabilities. Seif is a real advocate for human rights, and especially regarding the rights of children and persons with disabilities. As a head teacher, Seif teach all his pupils about their human rights and about removing the class gap between “normal” children and children with disabilities.

This month Seif is also in the process of opening a tailoring center for children with disabilites and children that will not continue with secondary education. The aim is to teach them skills that will be useful in work, so that they can improve their financial situation by earning their own money. Improved financial situation may also contribute to increased independence and improved life quality. The letter, in Swahili, document the opening of the tailoring center.
