2020

In January 2020 a group of bachelor students in social education from Molde University College went to Arusha in Tanzania for NOREC exchange. As a consequence to the Corona pandemic, the students had to return to Norway a little earlier than scheduled. However, they completed most of the planned activities and, in collaboration with Tanzanian fellows, they managed to initiate an important change for improvement of some children with special needs in Tanzania. Although each of the Norwegian participants prepared a blog post and pictures already in April, the pandemic situation made it difficult to get in touch with persons entitled to approve or disapprove publication of the pictures. We are still waiting for the approval, but we have now decided to present the blog posts. The pictures presented here are depersonalized. I am pleased to introduce the blog posts and wish you all an interesting read!

Kind regards,  Siv Sæbjørnsen

Last autumn 10 Tanzanian students from Patandi Teachers College of special needs education was in Molde as NOREC exchange participants. On this blog, they shared their eagerness in improving the situation of children with special needs, including their plans about keeping up their engagement and work to benefit children with special needs in Tanzania, after return from Norway. These agents of change have now completed their study programme. They are all qualified specialized teachers, working in schools in different regions in Tanzania.

I am Magnus Ramsdal and am a third-year student at Molde University College, studying to become a Social Educator. At the beginning of this year I was a part of a group of students that went to Tanzania for about two months, as participants in this NOREC project. In addition to the project aim, I had two main, personal goals. The first one was to share some of the knowledge that I have learned through my studies, and how this knowledge can be used in order to improve the situation of children with special needs. The second one was about learning about different cultures and how to use that knowledge in my future work life.

I am Emilie. In between studies, I work in rehabilitation and a nursing home. I´m passionate about that all people should have a good life and being taken care of whether they have a certain diagnosis or not. I´m particularly passionate about those who are seen as vulnerable in society, that they should have the same opportunity to have a good life in the same way as everyone else. I feel so lucky to be involved as a participant of this Norec-project. My ambition with this participation is to contribute in making more people more aware of the human rights in their work with children with different needs, in accordance with the Convention for persons with disabilities (CRPD), article 8 about awareness-raising.

Hi, my name is Ane Aasen Hveem. I feel very lucky to be involved in NOREC’s project between Norway and Tanzania. My ambition as a participant was to disseminate knowledge about and contribute the implementation of the UN rights conventions, CRC and CRPD. Thanks to this project, I have learned a lot about human rights. I am very passionate about this subject, and I ask: are children with special needs allowed to be “just children”? Are they seen as equal to other children? The fact that children with special needs are being treated differently based on norms and rules in different societies, seems to me, unfair.
