PhD in health and social sciences: Professional practice - terms and development

Molde University College and Volda University College offer doctoral education in health and social sciences (joint degree) through the PhD program.

Relevance

The program focuses on user-oriented and relational professional practice as it unfolds in the dynamic between administration and professional autonomy. The PhD program is designed for candidates with a professional background in health and social sciences and/or other relevant fields.

Applicants should have completed a relevant bachelor's degree and hold a relevant master's degree or equivalent qualification. The program encompasses both health and social sciences because professional groups increasingly encounter complex issues and must collaborate to develop quality services, as emphasized by concepts such as interdisciplinary and interprofessionalism.

The program will critically examine the possibilities and limitations in achieving such objectives. It is interdisciplinary and interprofessional as it is aimed at all professions in the health and social sector, focusing on how changes in framework conditions affect professional practice.

Organization

The PhD program is standardized as a full-time three-year study, which includes a training component (30 credits) and a research component (150 credits). The dissertation should be an independent scientific work of high academic quality concerning problem formulations, conceptual precision, methodological, theoretical, and empirical foundation, documentation, and presentation.

Ph.D. candidates become an integral part of the university's research environment and are connected through this to national and international research networks. PhD candidates are funded in various ways. Some are appointed to doctoral positions at the university college. Others will be funded by their employers or other external sources.

Admission

To be admitted to the PhD program, the applicant must have completed a master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent education in health and social sciences. Applicants with a different academic background may be considered if the proposed research project is relevant to health and/or social sciences. Other fields could, for example, include management or community planning from a health and social sciences perspective. Admission to the program is ongoing.
